A side income doesn’t need a logo. It doesn’t need a business plan. It definitely doesn’t require posting “I quit” on LinkedIn. Sometimes it’s just a way to make an extra few hundred dollars without touching the main job.
Start with what you can already sell
The fastest path is often not learning a brand-new skill.
It’s packaging something you already know how to do.
Examples:
- writing
- design
- tutoring
- bookkeeping
- virtual assistance
- editing
- photography
- language help
- tech setup
- local services
Service work can reach a paying customer faster than building a product from scratch, although demand, credentials, pricing, and client acquisition still matter.
Other options can work too
| Type | Examples | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Freelance service | Writing, design, tutoring | Need clients |
| Gig work | Delivery, rideshare, task apps | Time, fees, vehicle costs |
| Rent something you own | Room, parking, equipment | Rules, insurance, local demand |
| Sell products | Handmade, resale, print-on-demand | Inventory and customer acquisition |
| Digital products | Templates, guides, courses | Creation first, sales later |
The right category is the one that produces a decent net return for your time.
Not the one with the best TikTok screenshot.
Check your employer rules first
This part is boring and potentially expensive to ignore.
Look at:
- outside-employment rules
- conflicts of interest
- confidentiality
- invention or IP assignment
- use of company equipment
- licensing or ethics rules
Some employers require approval. Some don’t. Don’t assume.
And don’t build the side business on your employer’s laptop, time, data, or customer list. That’s not entrepreneurship. That’s evidence.
Track net earnings, not gross
If an app pays $500 but you spent $140 on mileage, supplies, fees, and insurance, you didn’t make $500.
Track:
- gross payments
- platform fees
- payment-processing fees
- supplies
- mileage or vehicle costs
- software
- time spent finding clients
Then divide by hours.
That number is usually more educational than the headline income.
Taxes show up even when no 1099 does
Side income can create tax obligations even if a platform doesn’t send you a form. For self-employment, net earnings of $400 or more generally trigger federal self-employment tax filing requirements. Estimated payments may be needed, or an employee with a W-2 job may be able to increase withholding from the main paycheck. The exact answer depends on the type of income.
Watch for scams
“Easy money” jobs that ask you to pay upfront, unlock tasks, deposit checks, move money, or act immediately deserve suspicion.
A legitimate client pays you for work.
You don’t normally pay them for the privilege of being paid.
The test after three months
Ask:
What did I actually earn per hour after costs?
Do I still want to do this?
Is this helping the goal I started it for?
If yes, keep going. If no, stop. A side hustle is supposed to improve your life. It doesn’t get tenure.
